Shirlene Marie Sellars was born on August 7, 1938. She peacefully entered into the presence of her Sovereign on November 11, 2021. She was the eldest of three children born to her parents, Joseph Sellars and Alice Catherine Corbett Poteat, both deceased.
Shirlene attended and graduated from (CCTS) Caswell County Training School; she achieved academic excellence regarding her education and desired to attend the Fisk University Nursing Program. She demonstrated diligence at an early age and assumed various roles throughout her employment working for: Alamance Laundry as a folder, Kayser Roth Corporation 12 years as boarder of hosiery, Alamance Community College as a substitute Daycare Teacher for 18 months, Riddle Cockrell in Housekeeping 5 years, and completed her work experience as a private caregiver for the elderly and disabled for 20 years.
Shirlene was a faithful member of New Covenant United Holiness Church for over thirty years. She loved being a member of the Pentecostal Echoes, Senior Choir and the HLC Choir, and attending prayer meetings and bible study on a weekly basis. She was also a Prayer Warrior, tither, and gave contributions to support all auxiliaries. When her health started to decline, she transferred her membership to Ebenezer United Church of Christ and was assisted by her family to attend 8:00 am services weekly.
Shirlene’s love for Gospel music was cultivated in the home and led to the Wood’s Family Gospel Singers sharing the good news in various churches throughout the community for eight years. Gardening, flowers, manicuring her yard and surrounding grounds to perfection, going to the beach with family, and her cats were her expressions of commitment, relaxation and absolute love for the outdoors. On her 83rd birthday special celebration of riding in a golf cart with several family members fulfilled her request and produced memories that will remind her family of just how special she was as the matriarch.
In 1958 she married James Woods and from this union was gifted with three daughters who were her pride and joy. She was a caring and devoted mother who always placed serving God and her children and family’s needs as her most important priorities. She was preceded in death by her husband James Woods, and two brothers, Thomas L. Poteat, and William Wesley Sellars. She was also preceded in death by her foster parents June and Lizzie P. Sellars.
She leaves to cherish her memory Joyce Ann Montague (Terry), Linda Kay Garrick and Sabrina Latrice Woods, four grandchildren, Brandilynn Nicole Marrow, Heather Nicole Allen (Steven), Joshua Terrence Garrick, and Mackenzie Leigh Terry, nine great grandchildren, Hannah, Khamariah, Madison, Charlie, Elijah, Judah, Jovonnie, Skyar, and Khai, one surviving brother Joseph Leon Sellars, 2 uncles James Corbett, and Melvin Corbett (Elizabeth) and a host of nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.
