Ms. Sadie Mae Poteat Cates age 72 of Burlington, NC transitioned peacefully on Saturday, May 23, 2020 at Transitions Life Care in Raleigh, NC.. Ms. Sadie, born on April 22, 1948, in Caswell County NC, was the daughter of the late John Ernest Poteat and Annie Will Harris Poteat Carver. Ms. Sadie married at an early age to Claiborne Lee Cates and in this union they were blessed with a daughter and son.
During her early years she was employed for approximately seven years at Gold Toe socks and hosiery. She was a retired residential aide assistant at Burlington Manor Assisted Living and then to Brookdale Senior Living in Burlington where she later retired again after being diagnosed with COPD.
As a youth, she was a member of New Ephesus Baptist Church. Recently, she became a faithful member and Mother of New Birth Baptist Church in Burlington.
She was a missionary by heart and served as a volunteer with the Senior Citizens Center. She enjoyed working with the Seniors because in helping others, she was helping herself as well. The life she lived spoke for her and her life speaks well of her.
She leaves to cherish her precious memories as a woman of God and a strong, loving, caring and giving person: two children: Gilda Poteat, Freeman Cates (Stephanie); her mother: Annie P. Carver; two sisters: Sarah Poteat Ledet (Michael), Jacqueline Poteat Plato; three brothers: Paul Poteat (Faye), David Carver and John Poteat (Margaret); three grandchildren, seven great grandchildren, former spouse: Claiborne Cates and a myriad of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives, church family and dear friends.
