Mr. Lamonte Powell was born in Kittrell, North Carolina on February 28, 1964 and transitioned this life on April 3, 2021 at his residence. Lamonte was the son of the late Theodore Alston and Virginia P. Moore.
Lamonte was reared in Burlington, NC and graduated from Walter Williams High School in 1982. In high school, Lamonte excelled academically and on the football field. He was a member of the undefeated 1980 and 1981 NC 3-A State Championship football teams where he was a captain and named Defensive Player of the Year his senior year. In addition, he was an honor roll student and a member of the National Honor Society.
After graduation, Lamonte enlisted in the United States Air Force and later joined the North Carolina Air National Guard. He proudly served his country and retired from the military in January, 2005 after 21 years of service. While serving in the military, Lamonte obtained an Associate Degree in Business Administration- Management from Rutledge College and a Bachelor of Administrative Science in Accounting from Guilford College. Lamonte worked for several companies in the cost accounting field as an inventory analyst, a demand analyst, and a procurement process manager.
He met his high school sweetheart in 1980 at a high school dance. Although, they did not become an official couple until the following summer. Lamonte married Donna Tate Powell on August 28, 1986. They were blessed to be married for 34 years.
His faith in God was an important part of Lamonte’s life. He was a devoted member of Mebane First Presbyterian Church as long as his health permitted. Lamonte was an ordained Elder and Deacon, the treasurer of the church, and a member of the building and grounds committee for many years.
However, the most important and special moments in Lamonte’s life were the birth of his two sons, Elliott and Evan. He loved watching his children grow up and instilled in them the importance of faith and family. Lamonte also passed along his love of football to his sons but required them to be on the honor roll if they wanted to play.
Lamonte is survived by his wife, Donna T. Powell, and sons, Elliott Powell and Evan Powell. In addition, his mother, Virginia P. Moore, three brothers, Clyde Powell, Floyd Harris (Rosalind), Randy Alston (Janette), two sisters, Portia Powell and Margaret Littlejohn. Father and mother in-law, Donald and Betty Tate, brother in-law, Donald Tate, Jr. (Jenise) and sister in-law, Angela Tate. Family members who were reared as siblings Sandy Lee Holden, Calvin Kingsberry (Joann), Jackie Bradsher (Rodney), Shardene Harris (Kenneth), Rodney Kingsberry, and Shawn Kingsberry. Lamonte also had special friends, Keith Bradshaw, Lindsay Harris, Jr., Vincent Parham, William Rodgers, and Thomas Saunders, Jr. and a host of nephews, nieces, cousins, and friends.
Three siblings who predeceased him, William Powell, Thomas Alston, and Melvin Alston.
