The life of James Leroy Connally Poteat began in Caswell County on a warm Tuesday, when he was born on June 30, 1942 in Caswell County to Ruth Jane Poteat Connally and Amos Monroe Woods, Sr. He was reared in the home of his beloved Grandmother, whom he called "Ma", Mollie Ann Poole Poteat. He was educated in the Caswell County School System and was a 1961 graduate of Caswell County Training School.
"Coot" as he was widely known, was a Professional Truck Driver for 41 years. He continued to drive following his retirement. Spiritually, he was a member of Beulah Baptist Church, where he served as a Deacon, sang with the Male Chorus, Mixed Choir and Senior Choir and served as Sunday School Superintendent. Fraternally, he was a member of Allen's Lodge # 676 Prince Hall Affiliate Free and Accepted Masons. Most Thursday mornings you could find him with the Thursday Morning Mix Bowling League "Men's Triple".
Remembering his life and legacy are his caring and loving daughter: Bridget Michelle Poteat; wife: Cheryl S. Poteat; eleven siblings: Amos Woods, Jr. (Maelene), Claude D. Woods, Perry Connally (Betty), Rickey Connally (Evon), Carol Anne Connally Williams, Mary Connally Johnson (Quint), Liza Connally Longshore (Stephen), Glenn Connally and Calvin Connally (Wanda); sister-in-law: Janice K. Woods; two aunts: Lula W. Bolding and Thurlia W. Brandon (James) as well as a multitude of nieces and nephews, cousins and dear loving friends and associates.
On September 5, 2020 in the solitude of his home and the presence of his Savior, "Coot" slipped away from our presence, however he is now resting with our God, joining his Ma', Mollie Ann Poole Poteat (Tom); his mother: Ruth Jane Poteat Connally (William); his father: Amos M. Woods, Sr. (Elizabeth) and three brothers: Kenneth W. Woods, John Thomas Connally "Buck" and William Thomas Connally.
