Mrs. Irma Bigelow McCandies transitioned on Friday, March 1, 2024. Irma was born on October 17,1954 to Geneva Pulliam Bigelow and Johnnie Hazel Bigelow in Caswell County. She graduated from Barlett Yancey High School, Technical Institute of Alamance (Currently Alamance Community College) and North Carolina College of Theology.
She was faithful member of Burton’s Chapel Baptist Church and actively served on the Senior Usher Board, Missionary Circle, Senior Choir, and Sunday School. She was also a cast member in the play “Glory Train”.
Irma worked as a nurse for many years. She was employed with Edgewood Place, White Oak Nursing Home, Doctor’s Urgent Care Center, Alamance County Hospital, Skilled Nursing and North Carolina Memorial Hospital.
Those left to cherish her memories are her husband of 49 years Joseph McCandies of the home, two daughters Celeste McCandies of Greensboro, NC and Cindy Tutt (Kiwon) of Norfolk VA. Five sisters; Annie Womack (Leroy), Mary Womack (George), Brenda Jones (Cornelius), Shirley Britt (Wallace) and Linda Evans. Two brothers John Thomas (Jean) and James Thomas (Tokyo). She was a proud Godmother to Aliyah Evans, Kennedy and Kendall Womack, and she was blessed with a host of nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her brother Johnnie Junior Bigelow.
Her hobbies included reading, cooking and preparing vegetables and fruits for canning and helping her husband on the farm. She loved spending time with family especially her sisters and spoiling her nieces and nephews.
