On April 19, 1946, Mr. George J. Mebane, Jr. was born in Mebane, North Carolina to the late Claudia Elnora Vincent and George J. Mebane, Sr. On February 17, 2020, he passed peacefully in his sleep at his home.
His early life was spent in Green Level, North Carolina. Following his high school education at Central High School, he joined the United States Army. After his discharge from the military George married Doris Burnette. He moved with his family to Alexandria, Virginia where he furthered his education at Northern Virginia Community College, Strayer University and Marymount University. He was employed at AT&T and retired after 27 years of service.
George was very active in the community and was a dedicated member of the NAACP. He dedicated his time to feeding the homeless, registering and encouraging people to vote, and supporting many other community causes.
George is survived by his wife of 50 years, Doris; a son, Kevin Tyrone Mebane (Vienna, Virginia); three brothers Larry (Marvia) Mebane of Axton, Virginia; Leon (Myrtis) Mebane of Jacksonville, Alabama; Kenneth Mebane of Graham, North Carolina; one sister Naomi (Wesley) Ingram of Elon, North Carolina, and many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
He was preceded in death by two brothers David Mebane and Cecil Mebane.
