Betty Winstead Obituary

Mrs. Betty Graves Winstead was the daughter of the late Pinkney Graves and Nannie Brincefield Graves Jones. She was born on March 21, 1931 in Alamance County.  On Saturday, December 12, 2020, she passed away peacefully at her home.

Betty graduated from Jordan Sellars High School.  After graduating, she left for New York to seek better work opportunities. She studied and received a certified Nursing Assistant Degree. Betty retired from Lenox Hill Hospital, New York, N.Y. after more than forty-two years of service as unit ward clerk.  During her tenure at the hospital and afterwards as a retiree, she was an active and loyal member with the 1199 Union.

Betty made a commitment to living by Catholic principles.  She attended and served as a faithful member of St. Mark Catholic Church in New York City.  When home in Burlington, Betty would always worship at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church.

She was an active member of the Easter Star in New York.  Traveling was her favorite thing to do every chance she got.

Betty was married to the late Walter Winstead.  From their union they had three sons: Walter “Roy” Winstead, Coy Winstead and Ernest Winstead.

She will be missed by her son: Walter (Roy) Winstead of New York, New York; daughter-in-law: Vera Winstead; two grandchildren: Latoya Nieves (Felix) of Houston, TX, and Tashecca Winstead of Bronx, New York, three great grandchildren: Ashlina, Delilah and Melissa Nieves; five great-great grandchildren: Hazel Chretien, Zayden Chretien, Cassiday Pettway, Andrew Pettway and Lukas Delgado; three siblings: Barbara Rogers of Manhattan, NY, Dorothy G. Oliver (Joe "JT") of Burlington, NC and Pinkney Graves (Frances) of Raleigh, NC.

In addition to her parents, husband and sons: Coy Winstead and Ernest Winstead, she now joins her siblings: Finley, Henry, James, Paul and Joe Graves, Fannie Beasley, Mary Cooper and Patricia Bynum, who was raised as a sister.
