Albert Lee Johnson, Sr., better known as "Hip" to family and friends was the son Amanda "Mandy" Roberts Johnson and James "Jim" Johnson. He was born April 20, 1923 in Alamance County North Carolina. He entered eternal rest on Monday, July 5, 2021 at his home in Burlington, North Carolina.
Albert attended Alamance County Public schools and joined Clover Garden African Methodist Episcopal Church at an early age. He served faithfully on the Steward's Board, as a Class Leader, Usher and Church Treasurer for many years. He also received the man of the year award in 2001 from his beloved church. He was a member of the Prince Hall Freemasonry. He loved farming and had a garden every year he was able to plant and plow. He was married to Verlina Virginia Slade Johnson and five children were born to this union. He was a supervisor with Cone Mills of Hall River for many years before retiring.
"Hip" leaves to cherish his memory: a daughter and three sons: Headrick Wade "Sissy", Albert Lee Johnson, Jr. (Ruth), Clayton Johnson (Barbara) all of Burlington, North Carolina and Frankie Cleon Johnson of Raleigh, North Carolina; two brothers-in-law: Donald Slade (Yvette) and Otis Slade (Virginia) all of Burlington, North Carolina; a sister-in-law: Evelyn Slade Watkins (Reverend Jerry) of Burlington, North Carolina; sixteen grandchildren; sixteen great-grandchildren; four great-great grandchildren as well as a host of nieces & nephews other relatives and friends.
In addition to his loving wife and devoted parents, he was preceded in death by an infant son, Jackie Ray Johnson and all his eleven siblings: David Johnson, Monroe Johnson, George Johnson, Matthew Johnson, Nathaniel Johnson, John Johnson, Lillian Johnson Lake, Gertrude Johnson Moore Pulliam, Bawana Johnson Slade Price, Julia Mae Johnson Moore and Beatrice Johnson Shaw.
