Timothy Lewis Shanks was born in Chapel Hill, NC and was affectionately called “Tiny Tim”. Despite being born prematurely, “Tiny Tim” beat all the odds against him and became a deeply loved and cherished member of his family. He grew up in Burlington, NC and graduated from Jordan Sellars High School where he was well known for his fun-loving personality.
Timothy clearly inherited his outgoing personality from his mother and grandmother. He also had a hearty appetite and loved his grandmother’s cooking so much that he became an excellent cook—being well known for his delicious potato salad among other things. He was always well-groomed and maintained a clean and tidy home. In addition he loved dogs—especially his pit bull. He was an avid sports fan with a footwear collection to match his favorite sports teams. (Go Steelers!) He loved classic cars including his Ford “Bronco”. Despite his large stature, people who knew him, “young and old alike”, realized that “at heart” he was a kind and gentle giant of a man who loved life, and many people loved him.
He is predeceased by his mother, Elizabeth Shanks, his grandmother, Bessie Elizabeth Shanks, and grandfather, James Mayfield Shanks. Surviving are his daughter, Monica Williams; aunts, Mary Shanks Petty (Charlie) and Elsie Shanks Rogers as well as his uncle James Shanks, Jr (Linda). In addition, he leaves behind his father, Joe Lewis Moore, his cousin Donnell Rogers, Jr (Tina), his cousin Lisa Shanks, as well as a host of other dear relatives and friends.
The family is deeply grateful for the many kind expressions of sympathy during our time of bereavement. We wish to thank all those at the UNC Medical Center and Alamance General Hospital who tended to his medical needs. A special thanks goes to the Sharpe Funeral Home for their genuine personal attention in assisting us with arrangements.
