Zelma Rainey Enoch, 74 entered into eternal peace on Friday, March 3, 2017 at South Coast Post-Acute Center in Santa Ana, CA surrounded by her immediate family. She was born December 11, 1942 in Cordele, GA to Grady Rainey and Minnie Mormon Rainey.
Zelma grew up in Cordele, GA and briefly lived in New York. She settled in Burlington, NC where she worked at Burlington Industries for many years. In her “off” hours, she worked as a skilled seamstress. She outfitted many choirs and wedding parties. Zelma was also “Uber” before there was such a thing. Burlington’s public transportation system was limited at the time, so after she retired, she provided van services to shift workers. Zelma was an avid cook and loved to bake everything from sweet potato pies and red velvet cakes. In her prime years, her kitchen was filled with people.

In her final months, she stayed at South Coast Post-Acute Center. While there, she kept the nurses and staff “in check”. She kept them laughing and gave advice. She also befriended the visitors of other patients.

Zelma was preceded in death by her parents Grady Sr. and Minnie Morman Rainey, her step-mother Inez Rainey, her children Johnnie Mae Mumphery and Diquette Mumphrey, and her siblings, Grady Rainey II, Grady Rainey III, Dora Mae Rainey Carter, and Inez Magalene Rainey Felton.

Zelma is survived by her sons Floyd (Brenda) Mumphrey of Burlington, NC and John (Kenyatta) Mumphery Sr. of Placentia, CA. Her daughter Seleda Mumphrey of Raleigh, NC. Her grandchildren: O’Edipus “Spanky”(Amillion) Mumphrey, Torie, Alexis Mumphrey, Nakita Mumphery, Sierra Mumphrey, Alexandria Mumphery, and John Mumphery Jr. Her great-grandchildren Yalimar Borges, Elantra Yabor, Treasure Diquette Mumphrey, Ne’Asia Hatfield, Ja’Rahzio Lavar Mumphrey, A’Sjanai Vasquez-Mumphrey, (Sierra’s baby) and Elijah Mumphrey. Her brothers Harry (Zenobia) Rainey of Grayson, GA, Willie (Sherry) Rainey of Ashburn, GA, Douglas John (Ida) Rainey of Mauldin, SC and Anthony (Teresa) Rainey of Lawrenceville, GA. Her sisters Edie Mae Kitchens (James) of Philadelphia, PA, Eloise Rainey Toomer of Winston-Salem, NC, Fannie Pearl Rainey-Canyon of Lauderhill, FL, Isabelle Rainey Pierce of Ashburn, GA, and Janice Rainey of Ashburn, GA and a host of other relatives and friends.
